Spotlight: Mary Hassell "Know When to Say When"

Before the pandemic hit and races started getting canceled, I was able to participate in my first ultra race attempt.  To say the least, it was an emotional roller coaster.  The agenda was a Skydive 50k race in Clewiston, Florida.  The plan is to skydive then run a 50k.  I have NEVER been skydiving and was super excited for this!  The weather, 70+ deg, no shade, uneven but flat terrain and sand.  I completed just under 15 miles of the 32 mile race before my body told me no more.  I was cramping in my legs and intermittently having tingling in my fingers.  I normally would try and push through, but I also knew that would not have been smart.  So, as our skydive was delayed due to weather, our first loop being slower than we thought and getting pushed back, after my half marathon-ish I finished my day with the skydive.  It was AMAZING!!  As scary as it may seem it was actually calm and surreal.  Back on the ground and my race complete I switched into “Coach Mom” mode and made sure the other girls had nutrition/hydration and even tracking down lights (we did not expect to be there that late and it got dark quick).  Overall it was a phenomenal experience.  I got to meet and spend time with new friends (including a runner that did his skydive jump dressed as Pennywise).  Looking back, as hard as it was for my competitive spirit, I did the best thing for my body and allow myself to race another day.  Can’t wait for the next big adventure.
